Reducing your insurance costs

By investing in a comprehensive fire alarm system you will be demonstrating that you are serious about protecting your property as well as meeting your legal requirements. This will result in reduced insurance premiums.

It is best to contact your insurance provider to ensure they know the steps you are taking in respect of fire safety and that you are giving them all the details they need to meet your insurance obligations.

How we help you Prioritise Fire Safety

Prior to installing a fire alarm system Security Group will review the property, taking into consideration how the property is used. We will design a fire alarm system that complies to current legislation and install it with minimal disruption. Once installed we annually review both your requirements and the fire alarm system to ensure that it still meets your needs.

Every business needs to assign somebody to be their Responsible Person in respect of fire safety and they are responsible for the fire safety policy for the building. A Fire Risk Assessment should be a core part of this policy. Its purpose is to identify any hazards and provide important information for the person responsible for fire safety to carry out, mitigating any risk as best as possible. While the Responsible Person could carry out this risk assessment it is recommended that it is completed by a third party certified provider, which we can arrange for you. We operate in Bristol, across south-west England and in South Wales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my property need a fire alarm?

Yes, it is a legal requirement for all commercial properties to (where appropriate) equip the building with fire detectors and fire alarms. It is also part of these requirements to ensure they are maintained appropriately, ready to activate in the event of a fire.
In respect of domestic properties, building regulations vary slightly between different parts of the UK however there are requirements for smoke alarms to be fitted. All the UK regulations reference British Standard BS5839-6:2019 which covers specific recommendations for fire alarm systems in certain domestic premises and covers both new-build and existing properties. The standard contains a large amount of detail on all aspects relating to the design and installation of fire alarm systems, but one area of it covers the type of alarm to install and the areas of the property to protect.

How can I ensure I meet the requirements for a commercial property?

You need to be familiar with your legal obligations. The British Approvals for Fire Excellence (BAFE), the independent registration body for Third Party Certificated fire safety service providers across the UK, provides guidance on its website. Security Group will only work with certificated fire safety service providers to ensure that we are supporting you to meet your obligations.

Apart from installing fire alarms what other fire safety measures should I take?

It is a legal requirement for all non-domestic/commercial properties to (where appropriate) equip the building with appropriate fire-fighting equipment (e.g. portable fire extinguishers). It is also part of these requirements to ensure they are maintained appropriately, ready to use in the event of a fire.

What is a fire risk assessment?

Carrying out a fire risk assessment is a mandatory requirement and should be carried out as part of a commercial building’s fire safety policy. Its purpose is to identify any hazards and provide important information for the person responsible for fire safety to carry out, mitigating any risk as best as possible. It can be undertaken by the person or team appointed responsible for fire safety in your building (Responsible Person/Duty Holder) or a certified third-party provider.
