Going on holiday this summer? Don’t forget home security

The school holidays have started for some, and will be underway very soon for others. If you are planning to go on holiday, don’t forget the security of your home while you are away is just as important as packing your passport and your flip-flops.

Take the time to make your house secure

A recent survey for insurer Aviva found that many people are not taking sufficient time to secure their home before leaving on holiday. Amazingly only 23% of UK adults actually set a burglar alarm and 19% check the intruder alarm system is working.

Aviva said this is despite research that shows July to September is a time when burglars take advantage of us going on holiday or being outdoors more. Insurance claims in these months, Aviva states, increased by 48% compared to other times of the year, while the average claim is more than £6,000.

Even if you do not have an intruder alarm then you can take simple steps to protect your property. The survey showed that just 61% of adults made sure doors were locked, and 58% ensured their windows were locked while only 48% moved valuables so they were not visible through windows. These are the simplest of security measures you can do before leaving on holiday.

Advanced Intruder Alarm Systems can help

However, an advanced intruder alarm system can help too and could give you peace of mind while you are away, and should save you the hassle of time-consuming insurance claims. Our main intruder alarm partners are Orisec and HKC.

Both intruder alarm manufacturers have developed apps so you can set and unset your burglar alarm systems remotely from your smart phone as long as you have an internet connection. This means it is never too late to set your alarm even if you have embarked on your holiday.

It also means you can check your alarm status while you are on holiday. If the alarm is activated while you are away you can take action to get support from family and friends if necessary. Remember, leaving a key under a pot or doormat is risky, although fortunately only 9% of adults admitted to doing this in the survey. However, leaving a key with trusted family or friends who can also keep an eye on the house means you will be more protected. The survey for Aviva found that (40%) of holidaymakers ask family members to keep an eye on their homes and 14% ask someone to house-sit.
